Social Innovation and Human-centered Design Training Workshop

YIAA offers experiential learning activities for participating teams to develop an understanding of social problems, human-centered design thinking, the current landscape of social innovation in Hong Kong and the work by non-governmental organizations (NGOs). These activities will enable teams to come up with innovative and viable service ideas. All teams need to join at least one of the workshops.

Stage 1
Empathy & Innovation

YIAA offers experiential learning activities for participating teams to develop an understanding of social problems, human-centered design thinking, the current landscape of social innovation in Hong Kong and the work by non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

  • Introduction to social innovation and human-centered design thinking
  • Population aging and challenges in Hong Kong and neighboring region
  • Community visit and field study – to understand the living conditions faced by the elderly in difficult situations
  • Sharing by social innovators

Allowing students to enter the community and understand the challenges faced by the elderly and the social values behind them, they can rethink on the issue of an aging population. They can also learn about social innovation projects designed for the elderly around the world and apply human-centered design thinking tools to conceive new solutions.

  • Development of a barrier-free community in Hong Kong
  • Community visit and field study – to understand the living conditions and challenges faced by people with visual impairment, Deaf people and people with physical disabilities.
  • Sharing by social innovators

Through diverse activities, students can immerse themselves in the roles of different people with disabilities, understand the challenges they face in life, and engage in dialogue with them through "Human Library" to deepen their understanding of the topic. The workshop also teaches students to apply human-centered design thinking tools and conceivenew solutions to address the difficulties faced by people with disabilities in their daily lives.

  • Community visit and field study – to understand works different organizations on sustainable development issues, the challenges encountered and solutions
  • Sharing by social innovators

Through diverse activities, students can immerse themselves in the roles of different people with disabilities, understand the challenges they face in life, and engage in dialogue with them through "Human Library" to deepen their understanding of the topic. The workshop also teaches students to apply human-centered design thinking tools and conceivenew solutions to address the difficulties faced by people with disabilities in their daily lives.

  • Issues related to sustainable development, such as energy and resources waste, community conservation in Hong Kong
  • Community visit and field study – to understand works different organizations on sustainable development issues, the challenges encountered and solutions
  • Sharing by social innovators

Through on-site experiences and interactive learning, students can explore Hong Kong's sustainable development issues, including waste management issue, possibilities of green living and community conservation. Students will learn to apply human-centered design thinking tools to conceive innovative solutions to address the challenges of sustainable development in Hong Kong.

Professional social workers and the YIAA coaching team will assist teams to refine their ideas. After attending the workshops on experiential learning and human-centered design thinking, the participating teams will bring their initial ideas to the mentor to improve the proposed solutions together.

  • If there are 8 or more groups of students to participate (3-8 students per group), our program can provide on-campus workshops and arrange activities according to teaching needs.
  • Workshops are conducted throughout the entire semester, with different themed activities in the first and second semesters. Please pay attention to the program website and Facebook page for details.
  • All teams must participate in at least 1 session of "Experiential and Human-centered Design Thinking Training Workshop" and 1 session of "Social Innovation Workshop".
  • Each participating team can attend up to 2 sessions of Experiential and Human-centered Design Thinking Training Workshop and develop ideas for the selected project concept
  • Workshop places are limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis according to the time of receipt of the registration form or website registration.
  • Any temporary changes or news regarding workshops will be announced on the program website and Facebook page.
  • Photos and videos taken during the activities will be used for program records and promotional purposes. If you do not wish to be photographed, please inform the staff on the day of the event.
  • In case of emergencies or special circumstances, the scheduled activities will be conducted online. Please pay attention to the program website and Facebook page for announcements.
  • In case of any disputes, YIAA 2.0 - Youth ImpACT Award reserves the right of final decision.
